Hidden Gems to Explore This Summer in Northern Virginia
When people think about summer in our area, popular destinations like Great Falls Park, Shenandoah National Park, and the National Mall often come to mind. While those places are great and you should definitely visit them at least once, sometimes they can be too crowded or maybe you’ve already done them too many times already.
From Lorton to Leesburg, I checked around and gathered up a helpful list of hidden gems you can visit this summer. Whether you're already living in Northern Virginia or considering making it your home, these places offer the perfect way to enjoy the outdoors, discover local history, and experience everything that makes this area such a great place to live.
Here are five spots worth adding to your summer bucket list (and don’t forget to check summer hours and other important information on websites):
- Mason Neck State Park - Lorton
If you've never visited Mason Neck State Park, you're missing one of Northern Virginia's most peaceful outdoor escapes. Nestled along the Potomac River, this beautiful state park feels worlds away from the busy suburbs despite being less than an hour from Washington, D.C.
Summer visitors can enjoy:
- Easy hiking trails through forests and wetlands
- Kayak and canoe launches
- Bald eagle and osprey viewing
- Family picnics overlooking Belmont Bay
- Quiet beaches and scenic overlooks
Unlike many of the area's more crowded parks, Mason Neck often feels uncrowded (even on weekends) making it perfect for anyone looking to unplug and enjoy nature. It's also one of the best places in Northern Virginia to spot bald eagles in their natural habitat.
Just a few minutes from Interstate 95 sits one of Northern Virginia's most charming small towns.
Historic Occoquan combines waterfront views, locally owned boutiques, art galleries, coffee shops, and outstanding restaurants into a walkable destination that's perfect for a summer afternoon.
Don't miss:
- Riverwalk along the Occoquan River
- Local ice cream shops
- Weekend art festivals and farmers markets
- Antique stores
- Hidden overlooks and scenic stairways throughout town
It's a peaceful destination that's ideal for couples, families, and anyone looking to spend a relaxing summer afternoon outdoors or shopping.
Stretching approximately 45 miles from Arlington to Purcellville, the Washington & Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail offers far more than just a bike ride.
The paved trail connects dozens of parks, breweries, restaurants, wineries, and historic downtowns throughout Northern Virginia.
Some favorite summer stops include:
- Herndon
- Reston
- Vienna
- Leesburg
- Purcellville
Bring your bike, running shoes, or simply enjoy an afternoon walking a scenic section before grabbing lunch or a cold drink nearby. The trail is shaded in many sections, making it one of the best ways to stay active during the warmer months.
- Riverbend Park - Great Falls Area
Many visitors head straight to Great Falls Park, but locals often prefer nearby Riverbend Park.
Located along the Potomac River, Riverbend offers:
- Beautiful riverside hiking trails
- Wildlife viewing
- Kayak rentals
- Canoeing
- Shaded picnic areas
- Less crowded trails than neighboring attractions
During the summer, it's common to spot turtles, herons, deer, and other wildlife while enjoying peaceful river views.
If you're looking for the beauty of Great Falls without the crowds, Riverbend is an excellent alternative.
- Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve - Leesburg
If you're searching for one of Loudoun County’s true hidden gems, look no further than Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve in Leesburg. Covering nearly 700 acres of protected forests, wetlands, meadows, ponds, and streams, this peaceful preserve offers a completely different experience from many of the area's more popular parks. With over 15 miles of natural surface hiking trails, it's the perfect place to slow down, disconnect from the crowds, and enjoy Virginia's natural beauty.
Visitors can enjoy:
- More than 15 miles of scenic hiking trails
- Quiet wetlands, woodlands, and open meadows
- Exceptional birdwatching with dozens of native and migratory species
- Goose Creek overlooks and peaceful fishing ponds
- A visitor center with educational exhibits and family-friendly nature programs
Birdwatchers especially love Banshee Reeks, as it's part of the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail and is home to a remarkable variety of wildlife throughout the year. Even if you're not an avid birder, you're likely to spot deer, turtles, butterflies, and countless native wildflowers during a summer hike.
Unlike many of Northern Virginia's busier parks, Banshee Reeks has remained relatively undiscovered by tourists. Locals frequently describe it as one of Loudoun County's best-kept secrets thanks to its peaceful atmosphere and uncrowded trails. If you're looking for a relaxing outdoor adventure this summer, it's hard to beat this hidden oasis just minutes from downtown Leesburg.
