Decluttering Before You Move: How to Sell, Donate, or Get Rid of Your Stuff

Just thinking about moving can be equal parts exciting and overwhelming. One of the most overwhelming parts can be the thought of decluttering your life’s work of collecting stuff (often just straight JUNK) if you’re moving, need to stage, or downsizing.

As part of the real estate process, decluttering has a lot of advantages like:

• Your home will show better and improve overall appeal
• Makes it easier to actually move
• Saves money if you hire professional movers

In fact, I think decluttering is such an important part of the process, I get hands-on with my clients. That’s right, I am more than happy to help you pack up things you don’t need any more and help them find a good home, hopefully even making you a little extra money in the process! Sometimes when clients don't need something but they do want the memories, we take photos of the items and put them in a little book to treasure for years to come.

Just recently I helped a client by sitting with them and making trash, donate, and sell piles. While it can be fun to reminisce about all the adventures you had collecting all of this stuff, it can be even more fun getting rid of it and getting the decluttering process going. I don’t have an emotional attachment to all of those trinkets so I can be a great resource!

Sell Furniture and Household Items Online

Many gently used items can quickly turn into extra cash.

Popular online marketplaces include:

• Facebook Marketplace and Other Community Groups
• Craigslist Northern Virginia
• Nextdoor

Furniture, tools, outdoor equipment, baby gear, exercise equipment, and home décor often sell quickly, especially when priced fairly and accompanied by clear photos. If you have some time before you need to get rid of everything, connecting with buyers online might be your best and most profitable option.

Hold a Garage or Yard Sale

If you have a large number of items, a garage sale can help you clear out your home in a single weekend and is even a little bit of fun.

Neighborhoods throughout Fairfax County, Loudoun County, Prince William County, and Arlington often have strong turnout for community yard sales, especially during the spring and fall. There are also several apps you can download and post your yard sale for free.

Tips for a successful sale:

• Price items clearly
• Advertise on neighborhood Facebook groups
• Accept cash and digital payments
• Start early in the morning
• Bundle smaller items together

Even if everything doesn't sell, you'll significantly reduce the amount you need to move.

Donate Clothing and Household Goods

Many Northern Virginia charities accept gently used clothing, furniture, kitchen supplies, toys, and home goods.

• Goodwill of Greater Washington
• Greendrop Donation Centers
• Local churches or other non-profits in your area

Each organization has their specialty and requirements for donations, so make sure to check online first before heading over. Also, many even offer free pickup for larger furniture donations, saving you time and effort.

Give Away Items Through Your Neighborhood

Not everything needs to be sold.

Many Northern Virginia communities have active Facebook groups and Buy Nothing groups where neighbors give away furniture, books, toys, appliances, and household items for free.

This is often the fastest way to clear out usable items while helping someone nearby.

Sell Designer Clothing and Specialty Items

Higher-end clothing, handbags, collectibles, musical instruments, sporting equipment, and electronics may be worth selling through specialty resale shops or consignment stores.

These businesses often have customers specifically looking for quality secondhand items, allowing you to receive more than you might through a traditional yard sale.

Recycle Electronics Responsibly

Old televisions, computers, printers, monitors, and other electronics shouldn't simply be thrown away.

Many counties throughout Northern Virginia offer electronics recycling events or permanent recycling centers where residents can safely dispose of outdated technology.

Always erase personal information from computers, tablets, and phones before recycling them.

Dispose of Hazardous Materials Properly

should be taken to your county's hazardous waste collection facility rather than placed in your regular trash.
